Montreal pop artist Charlotte Cardin is the latest to release some new exclusive tracks with the Spotify Singles series — including a cover of the late Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" and a French version of "XOXO" from her recent debut album Phoenix.
The release coincides with Winehouse's birthday. Cardin's take on the sultry "Back to Black" has some upbeat Latin flare, assisted by a guest verse in Spanish from reggaeton artist De La Ghetto.
"'Back to Black' is a song I grew up listening to on repeat and sang hundreds of times as a kid," Cardin said in a statement. "I always wanted to cover Amy, but never had the right occasion. As she inspired my music in many ways, I felt like this was the perfect moment to celebrate her legacy."
Meanwhile, Cardin's own moody, sensual kiss-off "XOXO" fits accordingly with the legend's ethos and swagger. Winehouse's life is set to be depicted in an upcoming biopic by Halcyon Studios, which her father has not permitted.
