Quebec-born, Vancouver-based artist Tariq may be known to some as a member of Brasstronaut, but he's currently focusing on his latest solo project. He'll release an album titled Telegrams later year, and he's previewed the upcoming release with a video for "Coquihalla."
The album hears Tariq drawing on both musical and literary influences, and "Coquihalla" was specifically inspired by a Maile Meloy short story.
"I wrote the song 'Coquihalla' after reading a short story by the American writer Maile Meloy about a quirky rancher who falls madly in love with a night school teacher," he explains. "Though she doesn't quite see him in the same way."
The chorus serves as the rancher's lament, as he drives home alone on the song's titular British Columbia highway.
The accompanying video channels that same feeling of isolation, finding Tariq pretty much alone in nature, pausing to sit next to a river before continuing to walk through the lushly forested land.
