Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and the National's Aaron Dessner showed off some American soccer team pride with a contribution to World Cup podcast American Fiasco earlier this week, and now the pair have unveiled an entirely new EP via their very own channel.
Going by the moniker Big Red Machine, they've released a self-titled four-track EP. It arrives through the beta version of their very own music-streaming platform called PEOPLE.
In a statement about the project, they explain:
We are a steadily growing group of international artists who have come together to create and share our work freely, with each other and everyone. We call it PEOPLE. It was born of a wish to establish an independent and nurturing space in which to make work (generally around music) that is collaborative, spontaneous and expressive in nature and where all unnecessary distractions or obstacles that get in the way are removed.
PEOPLE is for the benefit and development of the artists involved and just as importantly, for those who would like to access and enjoy the output. It is as much about the process of making work and showing all that openly, as the final outcome.
As such, it will feature recordings, sessions and live events, as well as visual art, podcasts and essays. The goal is to provide "rich context" to the final artistic output by letting the public in on "the raw, the unpackaged, the experiments and the evolved ideas."
Big Red Machine marks one of the platform's first releases — giving listeners a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the record with a photo diary, lyrics, full credits and more.
For instance, it reveals that the EP features contributions from fellow National members like Bryce Dessner and Bryan Devendorf, as well as Ben Lanz, Phoebe Bridgers, Arcade Fire's Richard Reed Parry, Lisa Hannigan, James McAlister, Ragnar Kjartansson, This Is the Kit's Kate Stables, and the Staves' Jessica Emily and Camilla Stavely-Taylor.
