He was a boy, she was a girl — can Avril Lavigne make it any more obvious? Yes, apparently, because the Motherfucking Princess is looking to turn the story of a missed love connection behind her 2002 hit "Sk8er Boi" into a feature film.
While she didn't confirm if anything had been green-lit by any production companies, the singer-songwriter revealed in a new interview that she intends to explore the song's premise cinematically.
"Recently, with it being almost the 20th anniversary [of Let Go], a lot of people have been asking me to play this song on TV shows," Lavigne said on a recent episode of iHeartRadio's She Is the Voice podcast. "It keeps getting brought back up and people will always reference it to me — so I'm actually going to turn this song into a film and take it to the next level."
As for the song's inspiration, the artist had drawn on what she was going through at the time: high school. "You know what it was like," she continued, "you have all the different groups and cliques; there's skaters, preps and jocks. ['Sk8er Boi' is] kind of like a missed opportunity at love."
Lavigne added:
The skater boy is in love with the preppy girl and she's too cool for him. But then, five years from now, she's feeding the baby and she's all alone, and she wishes she would have followed her heart and not tried to live up to society's expectations.
It truly is a tale as old as time — and one that's been previously primed for a film adaptation, too. Back in 2003, Paramount Pictures hired writer David Sabel (ER) to pen a movie based on the themes of "Sk8er Boi" [via Metro].
Now, the real question is: will Tony Hawk be featured in the "Sk8er Boi" movie? Only time will tell.
Lavigne recently praised Olivia Rodrigo for the return of rock 'n' roll on the charts (another potential casting option?) and mapped out a headlining tour of Canada for 2022.
