Alex Nicol has a new EP on the way. The Montreal singer-songwriter will deliver Been a Long Year Vol. 1 on June 30.

The five-track project marks Nicol's first release since his 2020 album All for Nada. He previews the EP with its eponymous lead single, which is assisted by guest vocals from former Dirty Projectors vocalist Angel Deradoorian, french horns from Pietro Amato and violin from fellow Quebec native Emmanuel Ethier. The haunting acoustic ballad employs imagery of a ghost town that mirrors Nicol's reality.

"I wanted to express my frustration at running from my feelings for so long," the artist said in a statement. "It felt like the world was crumbling at the same time as I was pretending everything was fine, but I really wasn't, and I finally expressed it. It feels like one long exhale for me."

The raw feelings conveyed in the lead single are present throughout the entire EP, but Nicol promises that it won't be a gloomy project.
