"I was wearing a hairstyle that is actually to protect Afro hair. Ruined mine, obviously."

Last August, Adele drew both the praise and ire of the internet after posting an image of herself wearing Bantu knots and a Jamaican flag bikini while celebrating what would have been London's Notting Hill Carnival in Jamaica, and she's now addressed the style choices in a new interview.

Speaking with British Vogue, Adele admitted, "I didn't read the fucking room," adding that she got something of a comeuppance outside of her Instagram comments section: "I was wearing a hairstyle that is actually to protect Afro hair. Ruined mine, obviously."

British Vogue's Giles Hattersley writes, "[Adele's] read had been, 'If you don't go dressed to celebrate the Jamaican culture – and in so many ways we're so entwined in that part of London – then it's a little bit like, 'What you coming for, then?'."

"I could see comments being like, 'the nerve to not take it down,' which I totally get. But if I take it down, it's me acting like it never happened," Adele shared. "And it did. I totally get why people felt like it was appropriating."

The complete interview with Adele can be read here, as listeners eagerly anticipate the arrival of a new album. Earlier this week, the singer teased the arrival of new song "Easy On Me."
