13 Most Beautiful... Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests

BY Cam LindsayPublished May 22, 2009

If you've ever seen one of Warhol's screen tests and didn't see the allure this DVD could be more chore than pleasure. But there's always been an indescribable magnetism about watching the creator of modern pop culture observing his subject. Packaged in a gorgeous hardbound case, 13 Most Beautiful is the first ever authorized collection of Warhol's work, and thankfully, Plexifilm gathered Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips to fill the experience with an appropriate soundtrack. Featuring songs by Bob Dylan, the Velvet Underground, Luna and Dean & Britta, of course, the duo score images such as Lou Reed drinking a bottle of Coke or wasted beauty Edie Sedgwick looking catatonic accordingly. A ten-minute featurette explores them in low-key tradition, following the pair as they struggle to come up with something for Dennis Hopper ("We almost had to give up," says Phillips) and discussing the process.
