We already knew that Hwang Dong-hyuk, director of the record-breaking Korean death match series Squid Game, had cemented his plans to return to the show for another season — now Netflix has confirmed that Season 2 is officially a go.

During an interview focused on the platform's 2021 fourth-quarter earnings, CEO Ted Sarandos dropped the news [via Variety]. When asked if there would be a second instalment of the series, Sarandos responded, "Absolutely. The Squid Game universe has just begun."

While there is still little information about how and when the series will return, Hwang previously promised that lead character Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) "will be back and he'll do something for the world."

"There's been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season, so I almost feel like you leave us no choice!" Hwang told the Associated Press back in November.

Season 1 of Squid Game aired back in September at Netflix, and went on to become the platform's largest series launch ever, beating out Bridgerton and Stranger Things.

The popularity of the series is likewise reflected by respondents to the Exclaim! 2021 Readers Poll, who ranked Squid Game as the No. 1 series of the year. Revisit Exclaim!'s 8/10 review of Season 1 here.
