Netflix's (sadly squid-less) smash series Squid Game has earned countless fans — like devotee Soulja Boy — around the world in the cultural reset since its debut, including NBA superstar LeBron James. Well, sort of.
James actually wasn't a fan of the show's ending, which didn't sit well with its creator, writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk.
Spoiler alert: this article discusses the plot of Squid Game, including its ending.
The basketball player was recorded by an Orange Country Register reporter after a press conference earlier this month. A clip shared to Twitter sees James telling Los Angeles Lakers teammate Anthony Davis that he'd finished watching Squid Game — wow, professional athletes are just like us — but hated the final scene.
"I didn't like the ending though. What are you doing?" James said in the clip. "Get on the flight and see your fucking daughter," referring to protagonist Seong Gi-hun's decision not to board a flight to the US. Instead, the character leaves the airport in search of the lethal Squid Game's cryptic organizers.
In a new interview with The Guardian, Hwang has seized the opportunity to clap back at James' criticism.
"Have you seen Space Jam 2?" Hwang asked rhetorically, taking an easy three-point shot at the animated/live-action sequel James recently starred in. Offside?
"LeBron James is cool and can say what he wants; I respect that," the creator continued. "I'm very thankful he watched the whole series, but I wouldn't change my ending. That's my ending."
