Here Are the Things People Hated About the Oscars Last Night

Last night, the Oscars were handed out at the official 2021 Academy Awards ceremony. People love to hate on awards shows no matter what, but last night's show — with its lack of official host, its questionable award order and its awkwardly sullen, half-empty room — was particularly loathed online.

The most egregious move was the order in which the awards were given out. Not only was Best Supporting Actor handed out way earlier than usual, but the show concluded with Best Actress and Best Actor rather than the traditional Best Picture.

That move was made even weirder because Anthony Hopkins beat out the late Chadwick Boseman, who was expected to win. Hopkins was asleep in his native Wales, where it was 4 a.m., meaning the show ended with a photograph of the winner and no tribute to Boseman.

Analysts predicted that this would be the lowest rated Oscars ever. We'll update when the numbers come in.

UPDATE (4/26, 2:20 p.m. ET): Just as predicted, the 93rd Academy Awards were watched by only a measly 9.85 million viewers, with a dismal rating of 1.9 among the 18-49 demographic, according to the Nielsen numbers. This means the 2021 Oscars are officially the lowest-rated in history.
