Now that HBO's hugely hyped The Last of Us TV series is officially happening, work is starting to get underway — and that work will happen in Calgary this summer.
Today it was confirmed that production on The Last of Us — which will star Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie — would begin in July in the Calgary area, the Director's Guild of Canada announced [via CBC].
Right now, production is slated to run in Alberta from July 5 until June 8, 2022.
The announcement today confirms rumours that have been swirling for months about The Last of Us setting up shop in Alberta. Even Alberta Premier Jason Kenney hinted at it, saying a "very exciting announcement" was coming this week.
He added: "[It] will be the largest ever, I believe, film or television production in Canadian history."
The Last of Us is based on the hugely successful PlayStation video game series helmed by Naughty Dog and director Neil Druckmann.
As previously reported, Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin is set to write and executive produce the series, while his frequent collaborator Johan Renck will direct. Druckmann will also work on the show, as both a writer and executive producer.
The Last of Us story takes place 20 years after a zombie apocalypse essentially wipes us out. Pascal will play the character Joel, who is tasked with smuggling Ramsey's Ellie out from a quarantine zone as humankind searches for a cure.
