A piece of South Park history is in jeopardy, as Colorado Mexican restaurant Casa Bonita has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Located just outside Denver in Lakewood, CO, the restaurant was the focus of the 2003 episode "Casa Bonita." In it, Kyle plans his birthday party at Casa Bonita, and he describes it as "the Disneyland of Mexican restaurants." The episode was based on the South Park creators' childhood memories of visiting Casa Bonita, and the company granted permission to be depicted. The restaurant has also appeared briefly in several other South Park episodes.
Casa Bonita filed for bankruptcy protection on April 6. This actually could help the business to survive, since they will have a chance to restructure their debts. The company's website currently states it is "re-opening soon."
A GoFundMe campaign, launched back in March, has raised $18,525 (of a $100,000 goal) to save Casa Bonita.
Casa Bonita closed last March due to COVID-19, and it has not reopened. The restaurant used to be part of a chain with locations across three states (Oklahoma, Arkansas and Colorado), but only the Lakewood location has survived.
The original Casa Bonita opened in 1968 in Oklahoma City. The Colorado location was founded in 1974.
