Fans of Montreal's storied post-rock scene have plenty to be excited about these days. Not only do Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Fly Pan Am have new albums on the way, but rising stars Yoo Doo Right have just announced their debut full-length album. Don't Think You Can Escape Your Purpose is set for release on May 21 via Mothland.
The trio infuse each of the album's lengthy, shapeshifting tracks with swirls of psychedelia, krautrock and shoegaze for mesmerizing, riff-laden sojourns that recall Montreal's legendary post-rockers while also infusing their sound with a fresh, adventurous energy.
It all comes together on the album's newly released title track, in which ambient synthscapes are joined by ominous post-punk vocals before giving way to hypnotic, roaring guitars. An accompanying video finds the trio standing by a wall surrounded by plants, while abstract video projections are displayed across their motionless bodies.
Don't Think You Can Escape Your Purpose follows the band's two EPs, 2016's Nobody Panicked and Everybody Got On and 2017's EP2. Yoo Doo Right also released two standalone singles last year: "Speed Guru," from a split 7-inch with Japan's Acid Mothers Temple, and "Marché Pt. 3" featuring Jasmine Trails, from the Sounds from Mothland Volume I mixtape.
