Continuing to share videos behind Polaris Music Prize-shortlisted album DNA Activation, Witch Prophet has returned with new visuals for "Makda."
The new video for "Makda," named after the artist's sister and the Queen of Sheba, reunites Witch Prophet with director Leah Vlemmiks, who previously helmed the SXSW-screened video for "Tesfay."
Alongside cameos from family members and footage both past and present, included choreography was shot in the wilds of Witch Prophet and partner/producer Sun Sun's artist retreat, event space and home base, Strega Villa.
As Witch Prophet explained, "Makda" is a song "about stepping into your power, as well as the strength, resiliency and beauty of the Black woman. It's also a reminder to those that try to take advantage of us that we are in charge and always have been."
Vlemmiks added, "Made in collaboration with dancer and choreographer Esie Mensah, 'MAKDA' mixes powerful movement with rich visuals that celebrate Witch Prophet's ancestral history and the women in her life that inspire her."
