In 2024, Lakeith Stanfield will make the 180-degree transition from portraying the Judas to Daniel Kaluuya's Black Messiah, to usurping Jesus Christ as a hopeful Messiah in the trailer for his upcoming movie Book of Clarence.
Since Stanfield burst onto the scene with compelling supporting turns in Donald Glover's Atlanta and Jordan Peele's Get Out, he's developed a Hollywood leading man charisma that's translated to roles in the fantastic Sorry to Bother You and the Oscar-nominated Judas and the Black Messiah.
His latest endeavour surrounds him with top-tier talent, including Omar Sy, Caleb McLaughlin, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard, Teyana Taylor, Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy as Pontius Pilate and Nigerian Black Mirror actor Babs Olusanmokun as Jesus Christ himself.
The film's official synopsis reads:
Streetwise but struggling, Clarence (Stanfield) is trying to find a better life for himself and his family, make himself worthy to the woman he loves, and prove that he's not a nobody. Captivated by the power and glory of the rising Messiah and His apostles, he risks everything to carve his own path to a divine life, a journey through which he finds redemption and faith, power and knowledge.
JAY-Z, who co-produces, will also contribute original music to the soundtrack alongside Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi and writer-director Jeymes Samuel.
Book of Clarence arrives in theatres January 12. Watch the trailer in full below.
