Hot on the heels of releasing her first solo venture "Entertainment" in March, Marta Cikojevic of TOPS — a.k.a. Marci — is back with plans to unleash her self-titled debut album. She's also shared new single "Immaterial Girl," alongside a Chloé Soldevila-directed video.
Marci is set to arrive on August 5 via Arbutus Records. Produced by her TOPS bandmate David Carriere, the record also features appearances from the band's Jane Penny, as well as Mitch Davis, Rene Wilson, Austin Tufts (Braids), Chloé Soldevila (Anemone) and Adam Byczkowski (Better Person).
Cikojevic and Carriere set out to craft pop songs that were catchy and danceable, down-to-earth and honest. "I wanted to make people happy," Cikojevic said in a statement. "I wanted to make people feel like they could dance even when there was negativity."
The pair put the album together over the course of a year, in a Montreal apartment littered with analog synthesizers and obscure instruments from the 1980s, building up their satin-draped nostalgic soundscapes from the bare bones of a Rhodes synth and a bass.
Tongue-in-cheek new single "Immaterial Girl" leans heavily into said low-end frequencies, featuring both analog and synthesized bass. The retro, VHS-footage-inspired video helps transport us into the indelibly time-stamped yet timeless world of Marci as she subverts a Madonna classic in an ode to resisting the superficial.
Watch the video for "Immaterial Girl" below, where you'll also find the album tracklist.
Pulling double duty, Cikojevic will stay busy with the band too — TOPS recently announced their forthcoming Empty Seats EP, the follow-up to their fourth full-length, 2020's I Feel Alive.
Marci:
1. All of Your Love
2. Immaterial Girl
3. Entertainment
4. Terminal
5. Pass Time
6. Play by Play
7. Deeper Shade of Blue
8. Call the Wild
9. When Love Had Just Begun
10. Electricity
11. BB I Would Die
