Tomberlin Announces New Album 'i don't know who needs to hear this...'

She's also shared the record's first single, "happy accident"

Last month, Tomberlin shared a new Told Slant-featuring single "idkwntht," and today she's revealed that song to be the quasi-title track of her sophomore album.

i don't know who needs to hear this… is arriving April 29 on Saddle Creek, and alongside the announcement, Tomberlin has also shared its second single "happy accident."

The new song is a flinty, slowcore-indebted bit of grunge rock with guitar from Cass McCombs, drums from Told Slant's Felix Walworth and bass from Philip Weinrobe, who co-produced i don't know who needs to hear this… with Tomberlin.

In a statement about the song, Sarah Beth Tomberlin said:

"happy accident" is a song about relational obscurity. Trying to sort out who you are or who you were to someone. Is this relationship romantic or is it just sex? Do you want to spend time with me or are you just bored? Do I make my own decisions that are good for me or are my decisions predominantly based on what I think you might want or need? I was kind of walking through moments in previous relationships in my life. I wanna know why someone wants to get to know me. Do you want to know me or just your idea of me? Do I want to know you or just my idea of you?

Much of the new record was recorded live, and judging by the two songs we've heard so far, it sounds like it'll have a heavier, more expansive sound than Tomberlin's previous work. In press materials for the album, Tomberlin said it was made "to examine, hold space, make an altar for the feelings."

In addition to the album announcement and single, Tomberlin has also announced an international tour starting in the spring, with support from Jana Horn on all North American dates. The trek will make stops in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.
