Surprise! Last week, mercurial English songwriter Tirzah announced a then-untitled new album, set to arrive this week. That album is now here, and it's called trip9love...?
Written and recorded with longtime collaborator Mica Levi, the album is made up of "piano loops on top of one beat, distortion added, then romantic vocal toplines." And when they say "one beat," they mean it — every song (save for a few drumless ballads) is built atop the exact same sharp drum pattern, distorted and mixed slightly different each time. It's an interesting exercise, though it makes some of the songs difficult to differentiate on first listen — spend some time with it, and they start to reveal themselves.
Alongside last week's album announcement, Tirzah also shared a string of tour dates that includes an October 15 stop at Vancouver's Cobalt Cabaret. "Booked a couple of nights in different spaces for those of you who can make it + sharing the record next week," Tirzah wrote on Instagram.
trip9love...? is the follow-up to 2021's Colourgrade. Last year, Tirzah dropped "Ribs" and released the Colourgrade remix album Highgrade.
