Shannon and the Clams are a force of nature. The Oakland, CA band, co-fronted by Shannon Shaw and Cody Blanchard, draw on a host of familiar genres — from early '60s rock and surf to garage and rockabilly — to create an instantly familiar, hook-heavy sound (think King Khan and the BBQ Show) that's infectious on record and explosive live. From the first guitar strum to the final drumbeat, their throwback rock inspired a balls-out, all-in dance party. Ebullient and sticky as Krazy Glue, their songs are built for sunny afternoons and Saturday nights.
Even mid-tempo highlight, "Sleep Talk," had the crowd swaying devotedly, cranking up the sweat factor in the sardine-packed room. Throughout, Shaw's lilt moved between pristine and assured and raspy when the mood called for it. She's a star and Blanchard — in all of his moustachioed confidence — is a perfect foil.
