Rihanna, Cardi B and Lena Waithe Slayed the 2018 Met Gala

Jared Leto was there too

Last night (May 7), celebrities flocked to the annual Met Gala to show off their wildest looks. And while many threw the evening's dress code theme — "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" — right out the window, others totally nailed it (no cross pun intended).

Rihanna maintained her spot on the throne as the reigning Met Gala queen, taking the theme to heart and giving the actual pope a run for his money in a heavily bejewelled silver getup, complete with her own papal crown.

Cardi B, meanwhile, channelled some Immaculate Conception vibes (despite previously explicitly telling us exactly how Offset got her pregnant) in an elaborate jewelled gown and headpiece.

She even managed to quash rumours of a beef with Nicki Minaj, who showed up dripping in red, and was seen chatting with her fellow "Motor Sport" rapper.

Master of None and The Chi star Lena Waithe had a less literal interpretation of the theme, opting instead to show up draped in a magnificent rainbow flag.

In a less meaningful display of dramatic colour, Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto also turned up to the event decked out in a blue suit, gold crown and fancily embroidered scarf — and perfectly in sync with Lana Del Rey for whatever reason.

There were plenty of other looks from all kinds of celebrities, including Janelle Monáe, Donald Glover, Solange, Katy Perry, Migos, SZA, Madonna, Ariana Grande and more. Oh, and there was the grand unveiling of new apparent power couple Grimes and Elon Musk.
