Rhiannon Giddens and her partner, Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi, have joined forces on a new album titled They're Calling Me Home. The record will be released on April 9 via Nonesuch.

Today, they've shared the album's lead single "Calling Me Home," alongside a Robert Edridge-Waks-created video. The song was written by Alice Gerrard.

"Some people just know how to tap into a tradition and an emotion so deep that it sounds like a song that has always been around," Giddens said of the track. "'Calling Me Home' struck me forcefully and deeply the first time I heard it, and every time since. This song just wanted to be sung and so I listened."

The forthcoming record features the sounds of Turrisi and Giddens' adoptive homes, Ireland, Italy and America, as well as "a little bit of the Congo," and was recorded during the pandemic.

Giddens elaborated:

We've been thinking a lot about what home means — separated since [the] pandemic began from our families — and a lot about loss, change, and death. Old songs from our cultures and histories were constantly swirling around us and we decided we wanted to put them down and release them into the world.

Turrisi and Giddens last teamed up on their 2019 album There Is No Other.
