Pansy Division

Life In A Gay Rock Band

BY Keith CarmanPublished May 7, 2009

There's never been question about San Francisco punk rockers Pansy Division's outlook: they're they gayest of punk rockers and they shove it in your face. While that has garnered them equal amounts of derision and attention for having a message that occasionally overshadows the music, their vehemency, pride and passion are virtually unequalled by any other politically-motivated band today. That's why this feature-length documentary about the formation, successes, trials and tribulations of Pansy Division and the homocore/queercore genre they helped create is not only inspiring and entertaining but almost necessary. Like them or not, learning the struggles these individuals with alternative lifestyles face is insightful. While a touch more attention could be paid to the grittier side of life in a homosexual punk band on tour, the otherwise in-depth look at this innovative band is compelling for anyone. The bonus live DVD only cements their importance in tying punk rock to yet another political/personal movement.
