'Native North America' Series Reissues Albums from Morley Loon and John Angaiak

Following last fall's repress of Willie Thrasher's Spirit Child, archival imprint Light in the Attic has announced plans to showcase two more artists featured on 2014's landmark Native North America (Vol. 1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock, and Country 1966-1985 compilation. Next up in the series are reissues for Cree folk artist Morley Loon and Alaska's John Angaiak.

Seeing release on May 27 is a repress of Loon's 1981 collection, Northland, My Land. The album preserved two previously issued 7-inches that were recorded with CBC producers in the late '70s. A press release notes that the songs tap into Quebec-born Loon's "Cree culture, language, and environment." The compositions found singer/guitarist Loon backed by a percussionist and a flute player, with the results described as "transcendent."

The recordings have been remastered for the re-release, with the gatefold packaging featuring lyrics printed in Cree language. The album's "N'Doheeno" had also appeared on Native North America (Vol. 1).

Sadly, Loon passed away in 1986 after a battle with cancer.

Also arriving on May 27 is an updated version of John Angaiak's I'm Lost in the City, which the Yup'ik singer-songwriter had first released in 1971. The 13-song effort was written and recorded after the artist returned from a tour of duty in Vietnam, as part of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Inspired by a project he had undertaken at the University of Alaska that attempted to preserve his native language, the song cycle present material sung in both Yup'ik and English. The musician's intimate vocal and guitar work on I'm Lost in the City is described as "emotional, deeply personal and extremely affecting."

Both the record's "I'll Rock You to the Rhythm of the Ocean" and "Hey, Hey, Hey Brother" were included on Native North America (Vol. 1).

The original pressing of I'm Lost in the City sold poorly and is hard to find. The repress features remastered recordings, with the gatefold packaging also showcasing one of Angaiak's paintings. A limited-edition pre-order adds a 16-page songbook.
