On top of having toured with of Montreal, worked with Deerhunter affiliates Josh McKay and Drew Vandenberg and sold out their album on Bandcamp, orchestral folk outfit Mothers have been regularly lauded for their stunning songs, which bristle with feeling and honesty. The brainchild of lead singer Kristine Leschper, Mothers combine experimental rock sounds with folk sensibilities, peppering lyrically raw tracks with strings and steady percussion.
On this episode of Exclaim! TV, the Athens, Georgia natives stop by our backyard to perform "Lockjaw," a cut off their full-length debut When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired. Their live performance packs all the sombre yet passionate spirit from the original recording into a stunning live experience, as Leschper begins gently strumming her guitar at a barely audible level, gradually building up to upper register vocal croons. The song climaxes at the abrupt entrance of harsh yet controlled drums, guitar and bass, but Leschper singing "You love me mostly when I'm leaving / I was half gone when you met me" would be moving all on its own.
Experience the performance for yourself in the player below, then check out Mothers' tour dates after that (which includes a stop at this year's WayHome).
Look out for the deluxe digital-edition release of When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired through Grand Jury Music on July 29.
