Selena Gomez, the most-followed woman on Instagram, will be portraying Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming movie about the singer's life, Rolling Stone confirms.
There are few other details available about the film, mostly only that it's being co-produced by James Keach and John Boylan, Ronstadt's manager. The country-rock icon was previously the subject of a 2019 documentary, Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice.
Gomez fans began to speculate that the Only Murders in the Building star was working on the project when she ended a purported social media break (announced following a clip of her whispering about Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet to Taylor Swift at the Emmys went viral) after mere hours to post an Instagram Story featuring Ronstadt's 2013 memoir, Simple Dreams.
She and the 11-time Grammy winner are both Mexican-American, and definitely bear enough of a passing resemblance — but it kind of calls to mind when Swift, Gomez's best friend, was rumoured to be playing Joni Mitchell in a biopic and the Canadian songwriting luminary allegedly told the producer, "All you've got is a girl with high cheekbones," effectively killing the project. ("If she's going to sing, good luck," Mitchell added for good measure.)
Only time will tell to see if Ronstadt herself will give Gomez her seal of approval. Between now and then, we can probably anticipate any number of social media breaks for Gomez — who is looking to focus more on acting after releasing her most recent single, "Single Soon," last summer.
Last year, Ronstadt had a bit of a Kate Bushian "Running Up That Hill" moment when "Long Long Time" from 1970's Silk Purse got a major streaming boost after it was featured on an episode of The Last of Us.
