It was evident from the outset of Lido Pimienta's set at Le Temporaire on Wednesday night (February 1) that she overflows with talent and personality — before her set proper, Pimienta was vibing with the music that DJ Glory Hull was providing in between sets. Mic in hand, Pimienta started to vocalize along to Grimes' "Oblivion" which made for an excellent segue into her own music and was a great primer on how well she thrives in moments of spontaneity.

That level of comfort with performing begins with her big voice, which has an incredible range and projection. The songs from Pimienta's recent La Papessa are well written and structured, allowing Pimienta to add colourful improvisations as she pleases. Sometimes — as was the case with "La Capacidad," one of the many highlights of the night — Pimienta will pick out and focus on a specific phrase, using the structure of her songs to guide how she repeats, emphasizes and changes certain parts. These improvisations turn into intense, circular moments, emphasized by the tectonic beats beneath Pimienta's voice.
