Last year, it was revealed that Leonard Cohen's tour in the October War would be dramatized for a new limited series set to start filming in 2024 — but before that, there's a Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) bioseries inspired by the legendary artist's relationship with Marianne Ihlen bound for Crave.
Actor/musician Alex Wolff (Hereditary, Old, Jumanji: The Next Level) will be stepping into the iconic bard's shoes for the small screen, with Norway's Thea Loch Næss (The Last Kingdom, Delete Me) set to play his infamous muse.
Billed as the "intimate tale of two, lonely people falling in love, during a period of their life when they are trying to figure out who they are and their place in the world, while one is becoming one of the most famous singers of all time," [via Deadline] the show is set in the 1960s, when Cohen and Ihlen — both in their early 20s — met on the Greek island of Hydra.
Ihlen inspired much of Cohen's work (and some pretty pricey love letters), including the titular "So Long, Marianne," which appeared on the singer-songwriter's debut album, 1967's Songs of Leonard Cohen. The cast also includes Anna Torv (The Last of Us, Mindhunter) and Noah Taylor (Peaky Blinders, Game of Thrones) as married journalists Charmian Clift and George Johnston.
According to Crave and NRK, principal photography began for the series on March 24. It is slated to film in Montreal, Hydra and Oslo.
The decades-long relationship between Cohen and Ihlen was treated to a documentary, Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love, in 2019.
