Brooklyn-based young gun King Princess brought her signature blend of delicate, anthemic queer pop to the main stage Saturday to an excited, mostly female afternoon crowd.
Wearing a Toronto Raptors jersey with her stage name written across the back, as well as a pair of rose-tinted glasses, King Princess (aka 20-year-old Mikaela Straus) brought a prodigious level of swaggering confidence to her songs "Upper West Side" and "1950" — both off of her debut EP Make My Bed. Working both sides of the stage with ease, she made a point of telling the audience that they were "so hot" they were "fogging up her glasses" and thanking some for "getting their titties out."
Moving through "Cheap Queen" armed with a turquoise Stratocaster, she then dedicated a song to her "father" Mark Ronson, launching into "Pieces of Us" with gusto, the crowd dancing along to the bass-heavy number. It was followed shortly by "her favourite" song to play live, King Princess and her talented backing band continued with "Talia," with Straus crooning "If I drink enough, I can taste your lipstick, I can lay down next to you." Ending triumphantly with her wailing rock'n'roll song "Ohio," King Princess gave everything the crowd wanted, and then some.
