Kathleen Edwards Returns with 'Total Freedom,' Her First Album Since 2012

Listen to lead single "Options Open" now

Late last year, beloved Canadian singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards returned with her first new song since 2012. There's apparently a lot more where that came from, because she's now announced plans for a new album. Total Freedom is due out on August 14, and the lead single "Options Open" is out now.

The 10-song album was co-produced by Edwards alongside Jim Bryson and Ian Fitchuk in Nashville. It will be released through Dualtone Records/eOne.

This will be the long-awaited follow-up to 2012's Voyageur. Since then, Edwards stepped back from music and ran a café in Stittsville (a suburb of Ottawa) called Quitters Coffee. She also had a serious bout of depression that began around the time she finished Voyageur.

In a press release, she explained:

I had no desire to write, no desire to play. It allowed me all the time and space I needed to even just enjoy listening to music again. There were so many times where, if I was thinking about my own writing or playing, my heart just wasn't in it. I don't want to write songs that are going to keep me in a dark place for two years. I didn't have to carry a lot of the pressure of whatever course I was on previously... There's a pressure sometimes to keep that ball rolling, and that's what was so freeing about stopping altogether and starting again. I realized I'm entirely in control and deciding what my course of action is.
