Joni Mitchell has announced the next instalment in her archival reissue series, Vol. 3: The Asylum Albums (1972-1975). Remastered by Bernie Grundman, the box set arrives on September 23.
The set compiles four of Mitchell's albums originally released through Asylum Records, including 1972's For the Roses, 1974's Court and Spark and double live album Miles of Aisles, plus 1975's The Hissing of Summer Lawns. Mitchell called Asylum home from 1972 to 1979, after her time with Reprise and before moving to Geffen in the '80s.
Fellow Canadian songwriter Neil Young penned an essay about his friend Mitchell for the set. An excerpt reads:
Joni's music is so deep and transporting. She comes right from the source. There is no mistaking it…For the Roses, Court and Spark, Miles of Aisles, and The Hissing of Summer Lawns…are all classics in my book. I listened to every album as it came out. The musicians she played with were always above my abilities. She had grown from folk to jazz and in between, creating a unique kind of sound that I loved to listen to over and over.
The set also includes a previously unseen painting by Mitchell as its cover art, and preorders come with a limited-edition seven-by-10-inch print. The Asylum Albums arrives as a four-CD set, as well as a five-LP box limited to 20,000 copies.
This latest archival release is the third from Mitchell since she began the series in 2020. The Asylum Albums follows the release of Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963-1967) and Vol. 2: The Reprise Years (1968-1971).
Today, Mitchell shares the remastered version of "You Turn Me On I'm a Radio" from For the Roses. Listen to that below.
