Jane's Addiction

Live Voodoo

BY Keith CarmanPublished Sep 22, 2010

Shot live in New Orleans, circa Halloween 2009, Live Voodoo boasts the classic Jane's line-up of vocalist Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Eric Avery performing a set comprised solely of their first classic albums. Nary a fan favourite is missing from this 13-song show ― the likes of "Ain't No Right," "Been Caught Stealing," "Stop!" and more are delivered with ample girth and flare. The only lag comes from Farrell, who understandably has the toughest mountain to climb, given the higher than high-pitched voice of his youth. For the majority of the show, he's visually confident, yet aurally slim and occasionally off-key, making this a dichotomously engaging, but underwhelming experience. Bonus material such as extra tracks "1%" and "Ocean Size" are marginally better than the feature, while a four-minute NME featurette highlighting how the original group reformed is but an ephemeral blip, making Live Voodoo interesting, but far from vital.
