Infected Mushroom

B.P. Empire

BY Joshua OstroffPublished Feb 1, 2002

Goa trance is an acquired taste; the polar opposite of the Euro trance that dominated clubs a while back. It is dark, gritty and seriously psychedelic. Israel's Infected Mushroom are one of the genre's leading lights, unknown to the outside world but revered by psy-trance congregations around the world. Their latest full-length, B.P. Empire, keeps their legacy alive, delivering a seamless set of stomp while incorporating strangely appropriate jazz flourishes. But while it loses something out of the context of a dayglo-filled forest trance party, and can feel somewhat over the top to the sober, this complex and undeniably musical recording beautifully mixes the evil with the transcendent and its pulsating heart never stops beating.
