Infected Mushroom

Vicious Delicious

BY Rob WooPublished May 22, 2007

This group really began to receive recognition after their fourth album, Converting Vegetarians, which featured two discs: a psy-trance side, in keeping with previous ventures, and an experimental side that toyed with alternative structures and styles. After I’m The Supervisor, the group’s popularity exploded as a result of impressive live shows with metal guitarist Erez Netz, who joined the group in 2004. With the stage set, this defining album, from the first strum of flamenco guitars to the last rippling synth, is an epic musical exploration. The title track features an incredible two-minute build-up climaxing with a pitch-shifting synth riff from the virtuosic Erez Eizen, while "Heavyweight” takes a romp through anthemic electro-metal. "Becoming Insane” eventually breaks down in its reprise to shredding guitars and neurotic chanting, and "Artillery” takes on a Cypress Hill hip-hop form with lyrics from Vancouver’s Swollen Members and a chorus from Duvdev reminiscent of SOAD’s Serj. "Special Place” and "Change The Formality” manage to excel amidst a performance of standing ovations, the former flitting between time signatures with mirthful delight, the latter taking on a unique progressive structure that exceeds itself from one transition to the next. Vicious Delicious is everything the name suggests: devilishly seductive and brimming with sinister beauty.
