BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jan 27, 2020

The 62nd annual Grammy Awards were given out at the Staples Center in Los Angeles last night (January 26).
Given the location, Kobe Bryant's death loomed over the entire event, from impromptu musical tributes to jerseys emblazoned with "24" in multiple performances. Nevertheless, music from the past year was celebrated.
First-time nominee Billie Eilish swept the major categories, winning Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Album of the Year.
Lizzo also proved a successful first-time nominee, taking home trophies for Best Pop Vocal, Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Traditional R&B Performance, while Lil Nas X won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video.
The newcomers shut out established names like Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift.
Vampire Weekend won Alternative Album of the Year, Cage the Elephant took Best Rock Album, Tool triumphed in Best Metal Performance, and Tyler, the Creator took Best Rap Album.
