NewJeans' 'Get Up' EP Is Targeted Directly at Your Brain's Pleasure Centre

NewJeans are a big departure from other massive K-pop exports, contrasting the bombast of BTS or BLACKPINK with their low-key sound bridging hip-hop, R&B and bedroom pop. The six songs that make up their Get Up EP are decidedly PinkPantheress-esque — especially stand-out single "Super Shy" — drawing on the style of collaborator Erika de Casier with pitter-patter beats that sound like they were created on a laptop (even though they probably weren't). It's club music made for late-night listening at home on headphones, sounding humble even as its pop hooks are targeted directly for the brain's pleasure centre.
