Emily Millard

'By Heron & By Season' (album stream)

Montreal-based singer-songwriter Emily Millard blends poetry with vintage-inspired sounds to create an art-folk aesthetic all of her own, and she's set to release her latest LP By Heron & By Season later this week. Before the record is officially out, though, Exclaim! is giving you an advanced listen to it in its entirety.

She previously recorded and released music under the moniker Miss Emily Brown, but the most recent material arrives under Millard's given name. By Heron & By Season was recorded with producer Sandro Perri on a remote island on Canada's West Coast, and it features musical back-up from fellow Canadians like violinist Jesse Zubot (Tanya Tagaq), cellist Peggy Lee (Veda Hille), drummer Dan Gaucher (Fond of Tigers) and bassist Colin Nealis (Andy Shauf).

The result is a lush, folk-leaning offering that is at once intimate and bold, as well as an exploration of both "inner and outer nature."

"I had never written such intimate songs before from such a vulnerable place, and if I had, I had shrouded them in much more mystery," Millard said in a statement. "The songs continue to reveal their layers of meaning to me each time I sing them."

You can hear her share those songs for the first time right now in the player below. By Heron & By Season lands on October 7.
