Dave Lombardo Confirmed as Misfits' Drummer for Reunion Shows

Following online speculation and just a few days ahead of their big reunion shows, the Misfits have confirmed that the ghoul getting behind the drum kit will be onetime Slayer skinsman Dave Lomabardo.

Lombardo's role in the upcoming reunion shows at the Denver and Chicago Riot Fests was confirmed by Misfits founders Glenn Danzig and bassist Jerry Only, with both praising the drummer as the right guy to jump into the horror business with them.

"I first met Dave back in 1988 when Danzig did four shows with Slayer in the U.S., before the first Danzig album was released," Danzig told Rolling Stone. "Dave is one of the best drummers around, and I can't wait for everyone to see him pounding Misfits songs live for these special shows."

After calling Lombardo a "master at what he does," Only suggested that adding a former Slayer member to the lineup made sense, believing the thrash unit to have been informed by the Misfits' legacy of brutality.

"I think the darker side of punk we created with the Misfits spawned the growth and evolution of punk into thrash, and sired bands like Metallica and Slayer, just as we inspired countless others in the punk revolution," he said.

Lombardo confirmed as much with his statement, explaining that "the Misfits created the horror punk attitude and had a massive influence on modern rock, punk and metal."

He added, "It was an easy decision for me to join them for these monumental shows. I was honoured to be asked, and am very excited to be playing with the band."

In addition to Slayer, Lombardo's resume includes stints with Suicidal Tendencies, Fantômas, Grip Inc. and his current project, Dead Cross.

As previously reported, the Misfits reunion shows bring Danzig and Only back onstage together for the first time since the group's original breakup in 1983. Misfits mainstay Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein will play guitar.

Possibly now featuring a whole hell of a lot of double-kick drum work, the Misfits are set to play the Denver Riot Fest, which runs September 2 to 4, and the Chicago edition, which takes place September 16 to 18.
