When it comes to cinema in 2018, Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria remake stands as one of the year's worst films. In fact, it topped our list of most disappointing films of 2018, and it turns out original Suspiria director Dario Argento agrees that it really is a piece of cinematic trash. In fact, Argento doesn't seem to be a fan of Thom Yorke's divisive soundtrack either — or at least not the way his music was used in the film.
In an interview with Radio Rai 1's Un Giorno da Pecora [via Indie for Bunnies/Consequence of Sound], Argento makes it known that, like us, he was not a fan of Guadagnino's reimagining of his original 1977 giallo horror classic.
"I saw the remake of Suspiria at the cinema. It did not excite me, it betrayed the spirit of the original film: there is no fear, there is no music. The film has not satisfied me so much," Argento said (according to a Google translation of the quote given in his native Italian).
He then added: "It's like that, a refined film, like Guadagnino, who is a fine person."
In fact, the only thing Argento seemed to like about the remake was some of its set design. "Guadagnino makes beautiful tables, beautiful curtains, beautiful dishes, all beautiful," he said.
Unfortunately, Argento doesn't expand on his feeling about Yorke's actual music for the film, so it's unclear if he thought it was just as bad as the film itself, or if he was more upset with the way the Radiohead leader's work was used in the remake.
But either way, you can't argue that Yorke's soundtrack stands in stark contrast to the original score helmed by Goblin and Argento himself — for better or worse.
