Daniel Romano's incredibly prolific 2020 has so far included a published book of poetry, a collab with Tool drummer Danny Carey, a pair of albums with the Outfit and more. Now, Romano and his band have returned with a third effort at the intersection of Bob Dylan, David Letterman and California punk outfit the Plugz.
Today, Romano and the Outfit have released Daniel Romano's Outfit Do (What Could Have Been) "Infidels" by Bob Dylan & the Plugs. It's a lengthy title, for sure, but one that comes into focus once the listener has delved into the effort's inspiration.
Romano had teased another "New Record Wednesday" on Facebook yesterday (May 12), sharing some "required reading" ahead of their latest effort arriving.
The Vulture article shared by the artist chronicles the time Plugz rhythm section Tony Marsico (bass) and Charlie Quintana (drums), and guitarist J.J. Holiday backed Dylan as unknown 20-somethings for the songwriting icon's 1984 appearance on Late Night with David Letterman.
The performance, which you can find clips of below, saw Dylan and the trio play "Jokerman" and a perfectly raucous "License to Kill," both from Dylan's then newly released Infidels, as well as a cover of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Don't Start Me Talking."
From that bit of Dylan lore, Roman and the Outfit "have often wondered" what Infidels would have sounded like had Dylan hit the studio with the aforementioned three-piece. You can hear their reimagining of the eight-song set below.
Romano's recent releases include Okay Wow with the Outfit and solo effort Visions of the Higher Dream. Last month, he also released EP Super Pollen, with brother Ian Romano and Fucked Up/Jade Hairpins members Mike Haliechuk and Jonah Falco.
