Charlie Quintana — the drummer known best for playing with Social Distortion, Cracker and Izzy Stradlin — has died. News of Quintana's passing was first confirmed in a Facebook post, with a number of tributes arriving on social media afterwards. He was 56.
Born in El Paso, TX, Quintana got his start playing with punk bands including the Plugz, Cruzados and the Havalinas. He played with Social Distortion from 2000 to 2009, leaving the band on good terms. The band publicly thanked him for "ten great years" upon his departure.
"Playing with Social D for ten years was a good time in my life," Quintana wrote upon his departure. "I was lucky to play on two Social D records and the second solo album, and I am proud to have been part of the band. We hit some spectacular heights which I will never forget — adios amigos!"
Quintana also toured and recorded with Bob Dylan, Mecca Normal, Agent Orange and Joan Osborne. The Facebook post announcing his passing noted that he had moved to Mexico from the United States and cared for stray dogs.

Charlie "Chalo" Quintana has passed away. One of the greatest drummers of all time. A true test of a drummers ability is a slow song. No one could ever match him on this. It was an honor to have recorded this and so many other songs with him. https://t.co/LKJqJxEq7T
