A lot can happen in a year, especially for an evolving teenager. 17-year-old producer and rapper Clairmont The Second's latest work, A Mixtape by Clairmont the Second is an ambitious, homage-paying effort that throws back to hip-hop's mid-'90s and early 2000s eras; it's also his best work to date.
Since independently releasing Project II on Soundcloud in January, the teen's already impressive vocal control and lyricism have improved. The mixtape vibes nicely at moments and rips at others: "Stop Talking, Spit Sumn" is Clairmont's ambition incarnate. "Rappers don't even rap anymore," he spits, calling out Toronto for focusing only on Drake.
But don't confuse the kid's beaming confidence for arrogance. "Cola's intro" is an ode to Clairmont's older brother and drummer of Toronto band, OBGMs, who inspired much of the teen's musical abilities, and nice way to showcase humility and pride, both great attributes for a young rapper to have.
