This might sound like Mad Libs, but hear us out: avant-pop star Caroline Polachek, whose single "Bunny Is a Rider" was among Exclaim!'s 30 Best Songs of 2021, has once again teamed up with PC Music maverick Danny L Harle... to contribute an aria to Last Days, an opera based on the death of Kurt Cobain.
As previously reported, Gus Van Sant's 2005 film of the same name is being adapted operatically by London's Royal Opera House and their composer-in-residence Oliver Leith. The libretto for the adaptation was written by Matt Copson — who also happens to be Polachek's partner and frequent collaborator.
The singer-songwriter has also studied opera at length, so maybe this actually all makes perfect sense (even in the context of her last "soundtrack" contribution being a Nancy Sinatra cover for Minions 2).
Translating to "I Never Want to See the Sun Go Down" from Italian, the aria is hauntingly gorgeous. Likewise, the notes Polachek hits with her bel canto can only be described as impossible for mere mortals to fathom.
Last Days opens at ROH's Linbury Theatre today and runs until October 11. Polachek has also shared that she will release a new, likely non-operatic single called "Sunset" on October 17.
Listen to Polachek's "Non Voglio Mai Vedere Il Sole Tramontare" below.
