Bob Dylan has announced the latest in his long line of rarities compilations. Fragments — Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol. 17 will be out January 27 through Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings.
The collection is spread out over five discs. The first of these is a 2022 mix of the 1997 album Time Out of Mind, while the next two discs are made up of outtakes and alternate takes from the era. Disc 4 is a live compilation, while the final disc is made up of previously released songs from the 2008 compilation Tell Tale Signs.
The demo versions were recorded at Oxnard, CA's Teatro studio with Daniel Lanois, who later went on to produce the final version of Time Out of Mind.
The new mix of Time Out of Mind was done by Michael H. Brauer, who said in a statement, "The album itself has been remixed to sound more like how the songs came across when the musicians originally played them in the room, without the effects and processing that Lanois applied later. It's not meant to replace the Time Out of Mind that won all of those Grammys a quarter-century ago; it's a reimagining, an alternate view of a great work of art. If the original album remains mythic and enigmatic, this Time Out of Mind puts you in close proximity to the players."
