Billy Bragg, Look Out: Folk-Punk Frank Turner Set for Epitaph Debut

BY Jason SchreursPublished Jul 23, 2009

Supposedly he's a household name in the UK but it might be his upcoming third album, Poetry of the Deed, that puts punk-folk singer Frank Turner alongside the likes of Billy Bragg and Joe Strummer in the annals of working-class songwriters.

With Epitaph Records/Xtra Mile on board and Grammy-nominated producer and fellow Englishman Alex Newport (Death Cab for Cutie, At the Drive-In) twiddling the knobs, Turner's latest album could be the set of roots-inspired acoustic rock that puts him on the map in North America when it's released on September 8.

"Poetry of the Deed feels like a really important record to me," said Turner in a press release. "I feel like I've been rehearsing for this, working out what I wanted to say, for the past few albums, and now this is it, the definitive statement. It's also a massive thing for me to have an album being released internationally and through Epitaph to boot. It's my manifesto for living."

Turner's also quite the road dog, sticking to touring pretty much year round, and he has a North American jaunt coming up in September/October (dates below), giving crowds from Vancouver to Detroit a chance to find out why the Brits are always quick to raise a pint to this guy.

Turner is fresh off a live stint opening for the Offspring, which was met with an equal amount of admiration and "what the fucks?" from the pop punk band's wide fan base, and his upcoming tour will be spent warming up crowds for the Gaslight Anthem. Hey, someone's gotta do these difficult jobs, right? It might as well be a blue-collar fellow like Turner.
