During his peak popularity, Akon apparently wasn't the only one smacking that all on the floor. In order to deal with his overbooked schedule, the R&B singer has admitted that he used to enlist his two brothers to perform on-stage as his body doubles.
Laughing about it with a TMZ cameraperson, he explained that the case of the concert switcheroos was how he managed to be in multiple places at the same time back in the day.
"That was around the time when you [just didn't] want to disappoint the fans ... And you couldn't be at three, four or five places at the same time." Apparently, neither of Akon's brothers knew how to sing, so a "DJ would press play" on a track in order for them to lip sync.
Though the brotherly body doubling ended some time ago, Akon says he never got caught "till now, thanks to [T]-Pain," who originally spilled the beans.
Despite the blatant trickery, the singer doesn't seem too worried about angering fans: "Believe me, they've seen the real Akon, trust me. My fans are die-hard fans, so they follow me everywhere I go," he said, advising anyone hanging onto tickets from any of the fake shows to turn them into NFTs.
With the cat out of the bag, Akon says not to expect any more bait-and-switches, both because of "social media" and because one of his brothers, Bu Thiam, is a now well-known music industry professional. Additionally, his second brother Omar allegedly went rogue and played as Akon on his own for some shows, and didn't pay back Akon's cut when asked.
