Surrounding the press circuit of last year's French Dispatch — one of Exclaim!'s best films of 2021— we got word of some new Wes Anderson films coming down the chute. One of those is Asteroid City, which is now due to arrive in select theatres on June 16, 2023, before expanding into additional markets later that month.
While we've still yet to see a trailer for the forthcoming Focus Features flick, the distributor has dropped an official synopsis:
Asteroid City takes place in a fictional American desert town circa 1955. Synopsis: the itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.
As previously reported, the film is due to star some Anderson-verse regulars and newcomers alike, including Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston(!), Ed Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan, Grace Edwards, Aristou Meehan, Sophia Lillis, Ethan Lee, Jeff Goldblum and Rita Wilson.
Anderson will follow Asteroid City with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, a Netflix production under the streamer's recent acquisition of Roald Dahl's catalogue of stories.
