The Toronto International Film Festival is officially happening this fall, and to prove it, the festival has unveiled quite the lineup. It even includes Denis Villeneuve's much-delayed Dune.
As expected, TIFF will run in Toronto from September 9 to 18, and organizers confirmed this morning it will be an IRL event that embraces a hybrid model. This means there will be in-person screenings at indoor spaces such as Princess of Wales Theatre, Roy Thomson Hall and the Cinesphere Theatre at Ontario Place, in addition to various outdoor screenings, drive-ins and the digital showings.
Beyond an IMAX screening of Dune, TIFF will include such films as the Alanis Morissette documentary Jagged and Edgar Wright's Last Night in Soho. There will also be screenings of Kenneth Branagh's Belfast, Danis Goulet's Night Raiders, Céline Sciamma's Petite Maman (her follow-up to Portrait of a Lady on Fire), Theodore Melfi's The Starling, Dave Wolley and David Heilbroner's Dionne Warwick: Don't Make Me Over, Antoine Fuqua's The Guilty, and the Naomi Watts-starring Lakewood.
This year, TIFF will also celebrate the work of Abenaki filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin through the retrospective Celebrating Alanis.
Overall there will be about 100 films screening at the festival this year, which is less than half of what TIFF typically had pre-COVID. Theatres will also be at reduced-capacity, with audience members having to wear face masks during screenings. TIFF's digital screening platform will also be back this year.
More films will be announced for TIFF 2021 in the coming weeks, and you can learn more about the festival at its website.
