Rage Against the Machine have collaborated with artist collective the Ummah Chroma for a new short film about whiteness. The 10-minute Killing in Thy Name can be viewed below.
Loosely taking its title from RATM's anthemic 1992 protest single "Killing in the Name," Killing in Thy Name follows a teacher and a group of students discussing whiteness and the early history of white supremacy in the United States.
Clips of the group's outdoor education are interspersed with pertinent quotes, and Rage's aforementioned song. An opening title card reads, "The following is a document of true events. Our aim is for this piece to be a fire escape from the fiction known as whiteness and a spring for discovery. Remember, the children are always watching."
An included interview clip with Rage Against the Machine's Zack de la Rocha finds the frontman explaining, "Living in the States, you're living in one of the most brutal societies in the history of the world, y'know? The country who inherited the genocide of the Native American peoples, a country which participated in chattel slavery.
"Any society, or any government or any system that is set up solely to profit a wealthy class, where a majority of the people toil and suffer, and sell their labour power...so long as that system's only true motive is profit interest, and not the maintenance and betterment of the population, to meeting human needs, then that society should not stand. It should be challenged, questioned and overthrown."
