In a devastating blow to the slasher genre, rumours casting doubt on Neve Campbell's continued involvement in the Scream franchise have started to emerge.

The actor, who has appeared in all five Scream movies as the iconic final girl Sidney Prescott, reportedly told a fan that she will not be returning for Scream 6 [via Bloody Disgusting]. The film is due to shoot this year and is scheduled for release on March 31, 2023.

UPDATE (6/6, 2:19 p.m. ET): Campbell has confirmed that she will not appear in Scream 6 in a statement to Variety:

Sadly, I won't be making the next "Scream film." As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise. It's been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You've always been so incredibly supportive to me. I'm forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.

Without Campbell's involvement in Scream 6, at least we know Courteney Cox has been confirmed for the next instalment. Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding and Jenna Ortega will also return, alongside Hayden Panettiere, who will reprise her role as Kirby Reed — originally from 2011's Scream 4. Dermot Mulroney has also joined the cast.

As with Scream (2022), Scream 6 will be helmed by Radio Silence's Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick are co-writing the screenplay.

Scream 6's tagline reads: "The Scream saga continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter."
