Natalie Portman walked the red carpet at the Oscars last night (February 9), and upon closer inspection, the black and gold ensemble she wore actually featured an homage to women directors.
The Best Director category was noticeably lacking any female talent this year, so Portman opted to personally honour three women filmmakers by having their names stitched onto her cape.
The black fabric cape was adorned with gold stitching that spelled out the last names of Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers) and Lulu Wang (The Farewell).
Portman attended last night's ceremony as a presenter.
She previously called out the film industry's gender problem while presenting at the 2018 Golden Globes, introducing the Best Director category by going off-script and saying, "Here are the all-male nominees."
In 2018, Gerwig became just the fifth female filmmaker to be nominated for Best Director, for Lady Bird.
Kathryn Bigelow remains the only woman to have ever won the category. She received the award for The Hurt Locker in 2009.
